Volunteering at the International Nanaimo Fringe Festival is more than just lending a hand—it's a chance to be part of something creative, community-driven, and full of heart. You'll meet artists and fellow arts lovers, gain behind-the-scenes insight into how a festival runs, and contribute to the success of one of Nanaimo's most vibrant cultural events. Whether you're here to give back, learn something new, or just soak in the energy of live performance, your time and presence make a real difference.
Volunteering in the Box Office
As a box office volunteer, you'll be welcoming patrons, selling tickets, and checking in with your Venue Manager if any concerns arise—whether it's an emergency or a patron complaint. Shifts tend to alternate between short bursts of activity and quieter periods, and most stations will have two volunteers, so you can take turns stepping out for breaks or even catching a show.
Festival staff may occasionally ask for your help with light tasks, but your main job is simply being present—ensuring the venue runs smoothly and stepping in if extra hands are needed. Just your presence provides invaluable peace of mind!
Friendly energy and basic math skills are a big plus, and don't worry—you'll be fully supported by a team. Volunteer orientation sessions will be held shortly before the festival to walk you through everything and answer any questions you may have.
Host an Artist – Become a Billet!
Touring artists will be coming to Nanaimo just for the Fringe, and we'd really like to help make them feel at home. If you have any space in your home to host one or more of the festival artists, we would love to hear from you! Our greatest need is billet homes located within walking or cycling distance of downtown.
If you have a spare room and live within walking or cycling distance of downtown, we'd love to hear from you. Billeting is a meaningful way to support the arts, make new connections, and be part of the vibrant Fringe community.

Volunteering at Fringe Hub
The Fringe Hub is the place for artists and audiences to meet. This is our clubhouse/town square/home base between and after shows. There's no cover and lots of entertainment.
Festival staff will be in and out of the Hub, but we want to be sure somebody's there holding down the fort, engaging with patrons and answering questions (if they're interested in knowing more about Fringe or looking for a friendly face to chat with). We may enlist your help with miscellaneous tasks but mostly you'll just be relaxing and being present. Experience with sound equipment is a plus in the event of any technical difficulties.
Performing:
Our Hub stage is open to musicians, poets, comedians, or pretty much anything you can throw at us. Help us make the Fringe special by sharing with us whatever it is you love to do.
